Dr. Tiziana Cappello, qualified to cover the position of Associate Professor, achieved her first PhD with the mention of Doctor Europaeus in 2013 at the University of Messina, Italy, with a doctoral thesis on the application of environmental metabolomics in ecotoxicological studies. She also completed a second PhD on topics related to life below seawater. Indeed, her research activity is mainly focused on aquatic ecotoxicology and biomonitoring of natural environments, with a special focus on the elucidation of the biological effects of classical (i.e. metal(loid)s, hydrocarbons) and emerging (i.e. nanoparticles, pharmaceuticals, microplastics) contaminants on both aquatic invertebrates and lower vertebrates, used as bioindicators. In the last years, she has been conducting ecotoxicological research by applying the protonic Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (1H NMR)-based metabolomics, a cutting edge approach useful to assessing the health status of organisms, in combination with chemometrics and conventional tools, i.e. histology, immunohistochemistry, molecular and enzymatic approaches, to gain novel and more complete insights into biota defence mechanisms under stress conditions. Additionally, her research focus also on the assessment of recovery strategies for a sustainable development of the sea. Dr. Tiziana Cappello serves as Reviewer for a number of prestigious international journals, and has participated to numerous Italian and International research projects.
