Track Chairs:

Antonio Testa. Department of Engineering, University of Messina, Messina, Italy atesta@unime.it

Massimo Di Gangi. Department of Engineering, University of Messina, Messina, Italy mdigangi@unime.it

Goals and objectives of the track

1. How the development of reliable, sustainable and resilient infrastructure can take into account of pollution threats associated with urban transportation in order to achieve a healthier environment?

2. There is a growing need for integration between telecommunications systems and IT applications with the aim of improving safety, security and efficiency. How new approaches and original ideas can be thoroughly tested and critically evaluated before to be implemented in practice in order to:

  • manage properly the complex interaction between transportation and environment?
  • establish effective integrated strategies?

3. Is the public transportation an opportunity to increase sustainability in urban areas?

4. Smart grids will transport electricity, but also information that will become an active part of the electricity system. How the development and the deployment of smart grids will get:

  • an improved resilience of the electricity system?
  • a more efficient energy management in urban areas?
  • a more effective pollution mitigation in urban areas?
  • a more effective exploitation of renewable energies?
  • a better integration between the electricity and urban transportation systems?
  • a better integration between the electricity system and other energy grids?

5. E-commerce has led to a dramatic increase of the amount of deliveries. How it is possible to manage this tendency in order to mitigate the conflicts between passengers and freight distribution in urban areas, with reference to both traffic generation and parking?
