Sustainability Tours

After the Conference, on Saturday 16th of June, choose to enjoy one of our sustainability guided tour. The tours are an occasion to get in touch with the most important natural and cultural destinations near Messina and with the sustainable activities implemented for their preservation.

TOUR 1 - The natural reserve of "Capo Peloro Lagoon": between high anthropic pressure and biodiversity preservation.

A day trip to discover the extreme Northern point of Sicily: a strip of land between the Ionian sea and the Tyrrenian Sea facing the Strait and Calabria. Here, two little lakes host a mussels cultivation as well as about 400 different animal species, 10 of them endemic. These lakes, so close to the sea, as well as the ancient ruins from the XVI century, make this place unique. 



  • 9:30 am Departure from Messina center by bus. A local tour leader will guide you all day long. A stop at the Church of Cristo Re is a must to have a view on the Strait of Messina and on the city. Arrival at Ganzirri, visit of the two lakes. Continuation to the natural reserve of Capo Peloro, for a tour on the seacoast to discover the “Torre Saracena” a tower testifying of the presence of the Arabs in Sicily.
  • A stop at the mussels cultivation center. Mussels here are cultivated through ancient and traditional methods, we will have here a demonstration of the process.
  • Continuation to the little village of Ganzirri, lunch in a typical local restaurant and tasting of local seafood and other products.
  • About 3:30/4 pm return by bus to Messina.

TOUR 2 - Seeking sustainability in Milazzo:  cultural heritage and traditional gastronomy preservation.

A day trip to discover Milazzo, named as “One of the most beautiful villages of Italy” for the charm of its historical center and the “borgo antico”, the enormous medieval castle and the amazing position by the sea. A walk through the The Borgo antico, the ancient part of the town, will make you immerge in an undefined past as the little streets and houses here have kept the medieval asset. The long seafront, with its ray of palms and the “gelaterie” makes the village a perfect setting for a relaxing day. The lunch in a familyrun farm lost in the sweet Sicilian countryside will be based on local authentic and genuine products, and will make the day unforgettable. 



  • 9 am Departure from Messina center on bus. A local tour leader will guide us all day long. Arrival at Milazzo, visit of the ancient “borgo” and the castle. The view from the top terrace of the castle is breathtaking.
  • 12:30 am/1 pm Lunch based on natural local products, at the Azienda Agricola Santa Maria del Bosco, a farm where the owners take care of their homemade production of bread, oil, cheese, honey, wine and other specialties.
  • 2:30/3 pm return to Messina on Bus.

TOUR 3 - Etna Natural Park: exploring one of the most active volcanoes on Earth.


A daytrip to discover Etna, the highest volcano in Europe with its amazing lunar landscapes, ancient craters and recent lava flows. The tour will take place on the northern side of the volcano, where nature is particularly luxuriant and the power of the muntagna can be felt in all its majesty. A walk on the board of ancient craters will take us to the heart of the volcano to see and touch the peculiar elements of its environment. The lunch in one of the most renowned wineries of the area will make the day a real immersion in the flavors and tastes of this amazing part of Sicily. What’ s the secret for such delicious and unique wine of Etna? Come and find the answer with us on this day trip through spectacular nature and best local wine producers! 



  • 8:30 am Departure from Messina on bus. A local tour leader will guide you all day long.

  • 10:30 am Arrival at Piano Provenzana, the most important tourist and ski station of this side of Etna. The restaurants and hotels here were completely destroyed by the most destructive eruption of recent era: the “perfect eruption” of 2002. Easy walk to admire the recent lava flows.

  • Continuation to Rifugio Citelli to meet a nature guide; departure to an easy trekking (about one hour and half) on the Monti Silvestri, a series of ancient craters that perfectly allow us understand the morphology of volcanoes and discover the typical vegetation of mount Etna.

  • Lunch and wine tasting at one of the most historic and important wineries on Etna. 

  • About 4:30/5 pm Return by Bus to Messina

Difficulty level/ equipment:

The walking tour on the craters is easy and approachable, yet you need to be equipped with good sport shoes if not trekking shoes, a jumper and a jacket. Sun protection is recommended.

TOUR 4 - From Alcantara Gorges to Taormina: a unique landscape and very special heritage.

A day trip to discover a lava canyon, the river Alcantara and the beautiful town of Taormina, for a full immersion in the powerful nature as well as in the sweet charme of Sicily, a land of myth, art, tradition, beauty!
The Alcantara Gorges will surprise us for the peculiarity of the rocks: the interaction between lava and water has created spectacular polyhedral rocks that hide the clear water of the Alcantara River. The gorges actually generated from an eruption! An easy walk along the river will let us admire the hearth of the gorges, where the power of nature can be felt in its majesty.

Spectacularly nested between Etna and the beautiful blue water of the Ionian sea, Taormina is the most popular summer destination of southern Italy.
Named as “The pearl of the Mediterranean” the village is still today the favorite inspiring place of writers, artists and travelers from all over the world, who come here to find a taste of the Sicilian “dolce vita” throught its labyrinth of little streets, the
belvedere, the greek theater...the magical atmosphere of the village will seduce you! 



  • 9:30 am Departure from Messina by bus. A local tour leader will guide us all day long.

  • Arrival at the Alcantara Gorges, descent to the bottom of the gorges through the public stairs, easy walk along the border of the river, with the possibility to refresh our feet in the fresh water if it’s a warm day!

  • Lunch in an Agriturismo, based on local specialties, in the countryside between the gorges and Etna.

  • Continuation to Taormina, walking tour in the center with its Belvedere, the Palazzo Corvaja, Corso Umberto I, enjoying the chic boutiques, the “gelaterie” and the amazing view on Etna and on the bay.

Extras: Possibility to visit the Greek Theater (about 10€ per person) or the beach Isola Bella (cableway about 3,50€ one way)




TOUR 5 - Visiting Vulcano, one of the Aeolian Islands - a UNESCO World Heritage site.


A day trip to discover one the Aeolian Islands: Vulcano. Did you know that the volcanoes got the name from this island? The archipelago is listed in the World Heritage List for the outstanding record of volcanic activity, and part of this can be easily seen through a pleasant walk to the top of the Grand Cratere della Fossa, the enormous volcano if its namesake island, where the sulphurous gases are permanently emanated. From the top, the view on the other islands is stunning and a tasting of the delicious seafood and the sweet dessert wine is a must! 



  • 8:15 am Departure from Messina center on bus to Milazzo. A local tour leader will guide you all day long. Boarding on a private hydrofoil. Arrival at Vulcano, departure for an easy trekking to the border of the “Gran Cratere della Fossa” to see fumaroles and to enjoy the breathtaking view on the other islands.
  • 1 pm Lunch in a restaurant, based on seafood and local products.

  • Some free time to enjoy the peculiar beach of black sand

  • 4/4:30 pm Return to Milazzo by Hydrofoil, continuation to Messina on bus.

Easy/moderate (total duration 3 hours,  1h30 walk, difference in altitude: +/380m), good sport or trekking shoes, hat, shorts and tshirt, sun protection is recommended.
